Out-of-Hours Registered Veterinary Nurse
Location: Basingstoke, Hampshire
Contract: Permanent, annualised-hours night rota
Pay: £22.10 per hour
Rota: 4–8 overnight shifts in each pre-agreed four-week rota cycle, with an additional two bank holiday night and two bank holiday days per year.
Shift times: 6.30 pm–8.00/8.30 am
The Hampshire Vet is looking for a confident, compassionate and clinically capable Registered Veterinary Nurse to join our dedicated out-of-hours team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an RVN who enjoys the variety, responsibility and clinical challenge of emergency and overnight work. You will work alongside one of our three experienced out-of-hours veterinary surgeons, delivering high-quality care for our patients and supporting clients when they need us most.
The role
Our out-of-hours caseload is varied, busy and rewarding. You will play an important part in the smooth running of the hospital overnight, with responsibilities including:

Providing high-quality nursing care for inpatients throughout the night

Monitoring, medicating and nursing hospitalised patients

Supporting the out-of-hours veterinary surgeon with emergency, urgent and walk-in cases

Triage of incoming telephone calls and walk-in patients
-
Delivering calm, compassionate communication and reassurance to clients
-
Maintaining accurate clinical records and ensuring clear patient handovers
-
Completing routine overnight hospital, clinical and infection-control tasks
-
Helping to maintain a safe, organised and supportive overnight working environment
You will have the opportunity to use and develop your nursing skills in a role where your clinical judgement, organisation and patient-care standards make a real difference.
Rota and working arrangements
You will work between four and eight overnight shifts on a pre-agreed four-week rota cycle, with an additional two bank holiday night and two bank holiday days per year.
Each shift runs from 6.30 pm to 8.00 am Mon-Fri and 6.30pm to 8.30am at weekends. The rota is designed to include a minimum of one uninterrupted week away from work in every four-week cycle.
Dedicated staff bedrooms are available for rest during quieter periods of the shift, while ensuring that the needs of our inpatients and emergency caseload always remain the priority.
The position is offered on an annualised-hours basis, with holiday entitlement incorporated into the planned shift pattern. Your contracted annualised hours will be 830-1610, with annual leave entitlement of 100-190 hours scheduled within the rota.
About you
You will be an RCVS-registered Veterinary Nurse, or eligible for registration, with the confidence and clinical ability to work effectively in an out-of-hours setting.
Previous experience in emergency, hospital or inpatient nursing would be beneficial, but we would also welcome applications from nurses with strong transferable clinical skills and a genuine interest in developing their emergency and critical-care knowledge.
